Over the last years the energy costs in our school were rising steadily, for this reason we were assigned to determine the current usage of electricity and gas and to reduce the annual costs. Furthermore the hot water system was very outdated and the heating installation was not optimal adjusted. The main goal of our work is to reduce the annual costs by 10 to 15%.

Reducing the usage of energy has a lot of advantages. On the one hand the school will be able to invest in new machines and interior, on the other hand the ecological quality will be improved.

It’s a very up to date trend to save money by reducing energy costs in the private sector and we want to bring this trend to schools as well. So we will set up this documentation as an example for other schools, who are interested in reducing their annual costs.

The need of changes after 20 years was definitely given. So we looked for the most promising changes in terms of saving money. We determined reducing the stand-by costs to one of our major starting points.

By creating a detailed chart of flowing electricity, we determined the main consumers. This information helped us to decide on which devices we should concentrate, to reach a good result.

Implementing a better concept of turning all computers and monitors off, will be a major part of reducing the usage of electricity.

To find out how well the isolation of the school building still is, we asked the company Erdgas OÖ to help us doing a thermal imaging. Because of the images we found out that the cladding of the building is sufficiently dimensioned, so we don’t have to make major changes regarding the cladding. Though we found some minor failures at a few windows, which we corrected as good as possible.

In conclusion we worked out good concepts to save 27,6% of annual electricity costs and 19,3% of annual domestic gas costs, whereat we already implemented parts of the electricity concepts. Those improvements led to savings of 18,6% of electricity.

By implementing all of our worked out concepts, savings of about 30% would be possible. Those investments would cost about 20000€.
